Cannulas are flexible, hollow tubes inserted into a patient’s veins or arteries.
- Inserted into small superficial veins (hands, wrists, inner elbows), we use peripheral cannulas for infusions.
- Inserted into large veins (neck, groin or under the collarbone), we use central cannulas for infusions.
- We refer to arterial cannulas for those positioned in an artery (inside the wrist or groin fold).
